Stood Flea

Suny Purchase has an event called "The Stood Flea" every other Sunday at our student center. Students who have small businesses come out for this and sell their items!  Other students can come out to support these businesses. This past Sunday, the 29th, they held “The Holloweekend Stood Flea” in celebration of Halloween. There were many salespeople. Jewelry makers, crocheters and bakers galore, the students shopping around were excited and “afraid of draining their bank accounts”. Rachel Skennion (@hook_and_brush on instagram) is a handmade crochet and art items business owner. She recently started her business though she has been working on building her skills for years now. “I'm a theater and performance major so as you can imagine i love being creative and coming up with new projects so when i found out that i could sell on campus, i took it up immediately” Skennion stated. The stood flea is an easy way to make sure these students get the attention that they need for small businesses. Skennion also enjoys halloween and all of fall. It is her favorite time of the year and loves doing things to get herself into the spirit of the season so she came out with a line of fall inspired crochet pieces. “I have been spending all of my time brainstorming more designs and making them while watching halloween movies with my friends, i'm having the time of my life” Skennion said. This inspired girl has felt this way since she was a kid watching ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ for the first time. “Those old Tim Burton movies are the reason I am the way I am now and I hope everyone feels this way about the things that inspire them and I hope that my art can help them appreciate things like this” Skennion stated. This Stood Flea was more about getting recognition and spreading smiles among her peers for Skennion rather than the money she would make from it.
